Digital technologies in the classroom
Digital technologies in the classroom
Today's world describes students as technologically savvy as they are the most sophisticated of any generation to come through any schooling system. In every classroom, teachers need to use digital technologies as part of their learning and teaching programs safely and responsibly. The continual technologies that are invented and introduced to everyday living has changed the way educators think about education and literacy.

As part of using digital learning for student learning, it can be leveraged and beneficial when teachers combine video technology with appropriate learning goals and tasks. In the case of using video for student learning, persuasive patterns of sub-optimal instructional use have been found and including this to a teachers pedagogical knowledge, technology remains a major factor for success in the classroom. Technology in the classroom is for teachers to construct mental models which integrate technology relevant functions with pedagogical and content matter knowledge.
Below is a link to a video which further explains digital technology benefits.
Digital technologies such as YouTube can be utilised within a classroom setting as a cognitive tool for student learning. The advanced video tools that come with YouTube guide and support students' learning activities in the classroom which allows them to access video sources in constructivist settings. From an educational perspective, YouTube and the content found on it certainly engages students' interests. Student's that participate and use YouTube are challenged to reveal and justify their values, sense of self and emotional responses to a particular topic being presented. In doing so, they can use this to connect with viewers in ways that help others and themselves increase their level of thinking. YouTube allows students to create and be involved in creating their own media, which brings into play their collaboration skills and allows them to demonstrate their mastery of ideas and concepts around a topic.

What YouTube allows educators to do has endless possibilities for benefiting student's in their learning.

Digital technologies such as the use of video has a wide range of common usages in schools. The functions available on YouTube allow for an even better and well presented lesson and there are five ways YouTube can be more beneficial in the classroom.
1. Flipped Instruction: Homework is an essential part of student learning and using this flipped instruction can be beneficial. YouTube allows teachers to find or even create your own videos that address the materials being taught. These links can easily be provided for student's to look at as part of revision or as part of something to look at before beginning a new topic.
2. Supplemental Information: Classes only go for a certain amount of time and sometimes there is never enough. If teachers want students to have some extra information as part of their learning or assessment, sharing links to additional resources will help them along the way.
3. Self-Directed Learning: Using this as a learning tool can direct students to YouTube as a resource to find the information that is relevant to them and what is being taught. If students are learning on a project or presentation, encourage student's to take advantage of the endless resources found on YouTube.
4. Classroom Enhancers: The choice of videos can illustrate ideas and engage students more than textbooks, pictures and lectures would. When it is possible or necessary, teachers should turn to this resource for building a more effective lesson.
5. Students can contribute themselves: Lets not forget that students can create original content and share with the class their own views on a topic. This feature is a great way for them to develop an online presence in a creative and educational way.

So how can I create an account for school purposes?
Log into YouTube and if you already have a Google account, you will automatically be signed in. Next you should click on the user icon circle in the top right and select ‘Creator Studio’, click on the "create channel' link and follow the instructions. A video tutorial below shows a step by step procedure.

SAFETY!!
Student privacy are important considerations when using services such as YouTube as they require personal details to create an account. Any use of a student's personal information online must be appropriately assessed and implemented to ensure students are safe and parents are informed and assured that these obligations are met.
Using digital technology in a Health and Physical Education setting
As for a HPE teacher, it is well known that majority of the student's in that class excel from visual or kinesthetic learning. With student's being involved in their practical lessons and lessons involving video analysis and observation, this will give them every chance possible to be successful in the subject.
The SAMR model below shows how this can be successfully implemented into a classroom.
Substitution: Students complete a worksheet on life saving that is printed from their text books.
Augmentation: Teacher creates a quiz using Quiz maker for students to take a quiz based on a video from YouTube video the students watched in the lesson instead of using pencil and paper.
Modification: Students are to write a script and create a short script around different scenarios to do with life saving. A video from YouTube is found and played for the students. They are to present their own video using YouTube and the scripts created based on their interpretations. The recording will be played in front of an authentic audience such as parents, or college admission counsellors.
Redefintion: Students are to collaborate and create a video using YouTube. While creating their video they are to answer questions that are in relation to their practicals and short answer questions related to their scenario. Other classmates are to create videos on different scenarios to do with life saving which will allow all groups to receive feedback before creating the final video as a class.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your blog.
The SAMR examples show a developing understanding in that they are completed in response to an actual task drawn from your teaching context – lifesaving. This should be flagged as the task prior to the substitution level. The task could be something like ‘students use their set text to learn about lifesaving, summarising their findings’. Then each level progresses the level of thinking and student agency to arrive at a completely new task made possible by the technology integration. You do suggest this, but it needs to be even clearer. Again, look at the original Puentedura SAMR model and other student posts (Mollie, Annaleise) to better understand this.
Again, if you look at Chris’s blog post 2 you will see an example that I have given him. Thank you for the comment that you left for him… it is good to see your collegiality. I am a tad concerned about the reference to “college admission counsellors” as I understand this as an American reference. Trust your own ideas.Great to see referencing. The reference list should be APA compliant. Work on this.
